UCIE holding International Friendship Affair

UCIE’s 28th annual International Friendship Affair will bring together people from different nations for entertainment, fun and food.

According to Namrata Dave, Graduate Assistant for the UCIE, there was between 600 and 700 attendants last year.

“It’s been very good,” said Dammy Orebiyi, Graduate Assistant for the UCIE.

Each year they have a different theme. In the past themes have included: international music and weddings. This year the theme is Arts Around the World.

“Each year we try to focus on something that conveys culture and cultural differences,” said Steve Lyons, Assistant Director of UCIE.

The event will include Indian, African, Puerto Rican, Irish, Caribbean, Lebanese and Macedonian dancing as well as Turkish singing. These groups will either be professional groups or student groups. There will also be a remark from WSU’s president, a flag parade, a fashion show and belly dancing. There will be Indian and Mediterranean food available for purchase.

According to Orebiyi, there will be raffles for an iPad 2, Nook, up to $250 in gift cards, Dayton Dragon’s memorabilia and Beats by Dr. Dre headphones as well as 22 door prizes under $15. Raffle tickets are $5 and will be on sale now through the event. Tickets may be purchased at the International Friendship Affair or in the UCIE office. The money raised from raffle tickets will go towards scholarships for international and study abroad students.

The event will end with an award ceremony. They will give the International Student Advocate Award and the Global Citizen Award to students.

The International Friendship Affair will be held on April 21 from 1 to 4:30 pm in the Apollo Room of the Student Union.

Join UCIE every Friday for their Coffee Hour events. These events vary in topic. They take place from 3 to 4 pm in E190 Student Union.

“It’s a good way to meet international students,” said Lyons.
