Black Men on the Move and Rainbow Alliance are joining together and hosting a panel discussion on “Homophobia in the Black Community”, which is expected to draw many students and faculty members. The event is May 10 from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Student Union Atrium. The event is annual, is open to the campus and is hosted by both groups, including a panel of three members of each organization. Brandi Sowers, Vice President of Rainbow Alliance is looking forward to the outcome of the event.
“We hold it each year and it seems to attract more and more students and faculty,” Sowers said. “The event promotes awareness of homophobia and sheds light on the dual relationship of two different minorities, the LGBT community and the African American community.”
Each year a professional (Faculty) panelist is added to the discussion as well. The implementing of a guest panelist is an opportunity for students to get a professional opinion and advice on this crucial topic. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend in order to be exposed to the issues revolved around and results of homophobia on campus. Sowers explains that “Recognizing that there is a relationship and similarities between two different minority groups can help to develop understanding and a common ground between individuals and groups as a whole. If we understand each other we can work together to create a cohesive atmosphere of acceptance on campus.”
Attendees are encouraged to stay after the panel discussion for a time of reflection and mingling with other students and faculty. After the panel discussion, a Q&A session will be held for students and faculty to ask questions about the topic. Those planning to attend are asked to write down questions before coming to the event and to bring friends. No ticket purchase is necessary for this event.
