This school year the UCIE (University Center for International Education) will have numerous events for students all across campus. On Sept. 7, 2012 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., the UCIE will host a Welcome Back Barbecue at E190 Student Union.
Namrata Dave, graduate assistant with the UCIE, states the department has been hosting the Welcome Back barbecue for 13 years now. “This event is to bridge the gap between new students, continuing students, international students and domestic students,” Dave said. She also said that for this semester, especially, the department will have more outdoor activities that students have requested in the past.
At the barbecue, students can expect to see and meet a lot of people, have a variety of food and lots of fun, according to Dave. Also, there will be outside volleyball, soccer and resize games. Even though the event is only an hour, the games can continue until 5:30pm.
“We expect to see a maximum number of people than ever before, more students getting involved,” Dave said. “We have so many students from different countries including India, China, Sweden, Thailand, Saudi Arbia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Nigeria and Turkey to name a few. If American students come, they will get the exposure from the different cultures and what these international students bring. Students will also get to see the programs for study abroad.”
Other events the Department has planned for this school year include a soccer game on Sept. 21, a jeopardy game on Oct. 5, Halloween pumpkin carving in the residence services building on Oct. 26, an indoor soccer tournament from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 and a potluck, where students can bring a traditional dish from their country, on Nov. 30. Nearly every other Friday, the UCIE has events from 3-4 p.m. in their office, open for everyone. If students want to learn more about anything this department has to offer, they can stop by the office at E190 Student Union.
