Bring Home the Bacon was more than just a late night meal for students. The event was a fundraiser to raise money for Residence Services Scholarship Fund and to make students donors to WSU. Residence Services, office of Annual Giving and the Student Philanthropy Council collaborated and put this event together.
"Our biggest goal during the event is to tell students the importance of giving back to WSU," Quanita McRoberts, President of Student Philanthropy Council, said. "This brings philanthropy to students. They get a chance to donate to a charity of their choice."
"Residential students are encouraged to come out for some free pancakes and other breakfast items," Vik Arunkumar, Assistant Director for Residence Life said. "But if they want bacon, they must bring their green piggy bank's with their student scholarship donation in it!"
Both McRoberts and Arunkumar agree that the success of this event comes from the planning meetings, lots of volunteers and the advertising of the event by Residence Services and the Philanthropy Council. They have a total of 65 volunteers.
According to McRoberts, the event has happened before on WSU campus. The advisor of the Philanthropy Council liked the idea and thought the date was perfect because it falls on Philanthropy Day. The Philanthropy Council wanted to make it fun and interesting and feel people would love to volunteer for an event like this. They first decided to have the event in only one location but once the word got out and they realized the number of people who would attend, they decided to expand.
"I tell everyone, come out and find out how to get involved on campus. We [The Philanthropy Council] want to be the voice for students and possibly get students to join Philanthropy Council as well as have a good time," McRoberts said.
Bring Home the Bacon was Nov. 13 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Honors Kitchen, Hamilton Hall and the Woods.
