The upcoming winter solstice on December 21 brings with it the beginning of many holiday seasons and traditions celebrated by religions and individuals all over the world. For example, a popular Christmas tradition in Spain is compiling the names of holiday feast attendees into an Urn of Fate, which tradition dictates will result in two people developing a relationship or friendship with one other.
A tradition in Hindu culture is the celebration of the Festival of Lights, honoring the return of Lord Rama after defeating King Ranvana.
Hispanic communities prepare for Christmas with processions known as Posadas, representing Mary and Joseph prior to Jesus’ birth.
Buddhist tradition celebrates the Lunar New Year, occurring between January and April.
There are traditions such as the Canadian gift-giving day after Christmas otherwise known as Boxing Day; Yalda, a Persian celebration of lengthening days held on the 21st and celebrated by remaining awake throughout part or most of the night and eating fruit that
signify dawn such as watermelons and pomegranates; and Pancha Ganapati, a celebration held in honor
of Lord Ganesha from the 21st to the 25th.
Other holidays such as Modraniht and Saturnalia celebrate the Saxon winter solstice festival and Roman winter solstice festivals, respectively.
Due to the diverse student body at WSU, there are many opportunities to understand and learn about other cultures during the winter season. Happy holidays!
