Students comment on the top Twitter accounts followed

Do a person’s tweets say anything about their personality? Several Wright State students were asked this very question, and the responses were quite diverse.

Twittercounter.com is a site dedicated to tracking the most followed Twitter accounts in the world. The following is a list of the top five accounts, along with opinions from various Wright State students on the celebrities that run the accounts.

5. Barack Obama

The 44th president of the United States hosts 24,566,787 followers, and his account is run by his 2012 campaign staff. The Obama staff used Twitter excessively while in the chase for the November election.

Some feel that the president’s popular presence on Twitter is inappropriate.

“It is a sad day in my book when the president of our country is considered to be more of a celebrity than a leader,” said Wright State Sophomore D.J Yantis.

Wright State Junior Jon Harris, disagreed.

“Considering that roughly half of the adult population uses some form of social media, a politician would be foolish not to maintain an online presence,” said Harris. “Twitter and other social media sites are a necessary and effective tool to spread campaign news and update the country on policies, considering most people obtain their news from an electronic source.”

 4. Rihanna

The Barbadian recording artist famous for singles such as “Umbrella”, “Take a Bow”, and “Disturbia” has 27,306,553 followers.

According to Wright State Student William Coleman, Rihanna’s Twitter account sets a bad example for young fans.

“Rihanna does all types of crazy stuff on her Twitter account,” said Coleman. “She constantly posts pictures of herself and Chris Brown smoking weed and getting drunk, and that is a terrible example to set for young girls.”

3. Katy Perry

The Californian singer, songwriter and actress famous for songs like “I Kissed A Girl” and “Hot and Cold” has 30,126,793 followers.

Though Wright State Junior Michael Mossbarger was aware of the pop singer’s accomplishments, he was not personally a fan.

“Celebrities such as Katy Perry are quite the success stories” said Wright State Junior Michael Mossbarger. “But I’m not the biggest fan of her.”

2. Justin Beber

The 18 year old Canadian singer songwriter famous for songs such as “Baby” and “Somebody To Love” has 31,549,561 followers.

“His music isn’t something that I would normally listen to,” said Mossbarger. “But he has the ability and talent, and it makes sense that people would follow him on Twitter.  People would kill to know where he’s going and what he’s doing at all times.”

1.       Lady Gaga

The songwriting pop singer from New York City holds the number one account on Twitter, with 32,174,469 followers.

“She’s certainly the most interesting pop star out there today” said Wright State Student John Hamilton. “I wouldn’t call myself a fan, but she’s interesting.”

Though Gaga is very talented and eccentric, her tweets are average and uninteresting, according to Wright State Student Tori Adams.

“I’ll admit I followed Gaga,” said Adams. “But unfollowed her because her tweets aren’t interesting.”

Adams also gave her thoughts on celebrities in general.

“Celebrities aren’t special. Just rich, and hopefully talented,” said Adams. “America needs new priorities.”
