Whether it be in preventing sickness, trying to maintain a health-related New Year’s Resolution, or
looking for a solution to an issue, many students have something that they would like to avert or adjust in
their lives. The resources to do so are readily available both on campus and nearby.
The most convenient, and perhaps best, resource for students is the Student Health and Wellness Center,
located in the Student Union. The Center offers counseling ranging from drug and alcohol abuse to
nutrition, stress, and sleeplessness. They perform most medical services, including screenings for
Sexually Transmitted Infections, physicals, and pregnancy tests. The Center accepts Wright State
University’s health care plan, meaning that those who paid for health insurance for the semester should
take advantage of the Center for all of their health related needs.
The student health care plan is provided through United Health Care, which also covers most services
offered by Wright State Physicians through the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.
However, students who are covered by United Health Care should keep in mind that, unless there is an
emergency, the insurance will only cover off campus treatment after they have received a referral from
the Student Health and Wellness Center.
Students who are experiencing issues with anything from alcohol to drugs to domestic abuse should
be aware of the different AA programs, rehabilitation centers, and safe houses in the Dayton area
(www.aadaytononline.org, www.drugrehabdayton.com, and www.ywca.org). Dayton has a wealth of
resources, and any other issues that students are experiencing can usually be found through a simple
Internet search.
However, students should not be afraid to approach the Student Health and Wellness Center. “Students
should feel comfortable bringing their concerns and problems to Student Health Services as it is our
commitment to maintain privacy and complying with HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act),” said Leatha Ross, the Director of Student Health Services. “Health information
is private and sensitive and must be treated as such. No information is shared outside of Student Health
unless written permission is obtained from the student. Records are confidential.”
