Show your pride by recycling as many nonfood-contaminated items as possible around campus. There’s an eight-week competition called RecycleMania Tournament between the United States and Canada.
“RecycleMania is a nationwide competition to help raise recycling awareness,” Gina Reese, Custodial Service Manager, said. “Recycling is the responsible thing to do for our environment.”
According to the RecycleMania pamphlet, the pre-season trials starting Jan. 20 through Feb. 2 are encouraged to track and report weights. The actual competition is from Feb. 3 through March 30 when schools start tracking recycling and trash weights. Hundreds of colleges across the U.S and Canada compete each year to see which country can win and recycle the most. Wright State has been participating in RecycleMania for seven years.
“In 2007 we were recycling at the rate of 4.64% and placed 147 out of 175 participants,” Reese said. “Over the past six years our recycling efforts have increased to 34.48% and we placed 90 out of 266 participants. Wouldn’t it be nice to see Wright State University win first place?”
Winners will be announced on April 12.
Recycle notebook paper, phone books, cereal boxes, newspapers, junk mail, drink boxes and other cartons. It is also encouraged to recycle more than just paper such as plastics, glass and can items. Plastic items include but are not limited to: bottles, milk jugs, soda, water, detergent and shampoo bottles. Glass items can be clear, brown, green or blue. Cans include but are not limited to: beverage cans, steel soup and food cans and empty aerosol cans. Labels do not have to be removed.
You can locate recycle bins around campus next to most trash cans found in the main hallways, the Student Union, Union Market, the Hangar, the Dunbar library and near snack machines and office/file break rooms.
“Before you dispose an item as ‘waste,’ please ask yourself if the item you are disposing can be recycled,” Reese said.
Once full, bins are taken to the recycling compactor on Wright State’s campus where they are processed before being taken to the Rumpke Recycling Plant.
