Over the winter break, WSU saw a few changes in preparation for Spring Semester 2013, including the College of Liberal Arts announcement of having selected a new dean, Dr. Kristin Sobolik. Dr. Sobolik, former associate dean at University of Maine, is replacing retired CoLA dean Charles Taylor.
Students will also see more opportunities for internships and co-ops with the addition of as many as 3,500 new positions. An $11M grant given to Ohio universities to attract and keep skilled workers in the area, which will provide WSU with $1.3M to promote job growth for students. Some employers involved in the initiative to help students gain work experience while in school include WPAFB, Proctor & Gamble and Wright State Applied Research Corporation; in addition to many others.
The 30th anniversary of WSU’s well-anticipated annual Madrigal Dinner was held over break from 13-16 Dec, featuring a dinner theater and choral music from 1576 in the Apollo Room in the Student Union. A madrigal is a form of music originating in Italy in the 16th century Renaissance and early Baroque periods performed by a group of 2-8 unaccompanied singers.
Success initiatives have also been recently implemented and will go into effect Spring Semester, some of which include mandatory intervention for students on probation, Joint-enrollment and collaborative programs with local community colleges, the addition of study coaches and proactive intervention for at-risk students.
