Students react to their first semester and shortened winter break

This year’s conversion to semesters has been an adjustment for Wright State’s continuing students. Changes in degree requirements, class cancellations, and a shortened winter break have made for an interesting first semester. Students seem to have mixed feelings about the transition—some think it’s for the best, but some think it’s getting in the way. “Once we hit week ten, I felt like the semester should have been over because that’s what I was used to,” says Dan Darkow, a sophomore, “but I realized that at the end of the semester, we would be half done instead of only a third, and that made it more manageable.” Dan also says that he liked the shorter winter break, saying, “It was nice to be home for a little bit, but six weeks was way too long.” However, Chad Jacobs, another student making the quarters-to-semesters change, says, “I didn’t like it because I didn’t have as much of an opportunity to try a lot of different classes. Basically, if you took a class and you didn’t like it, it felt like you wasted half a year.” When asked about the shorter winter break, Chad responded that he “did enjoy the break because it didn’t feel like a summer break, like the six week break.”
