Valentine’s Day does not have to be a holiday for couples. Singles can enjoy the day and spread their love as well. However, for many people, being dateless leaves them feeling lonely and irritated.
The important message for singles to remember is that Valentine’s Day is a festival that celebrates love. Saint Valentine, who the day is in remembrance of, stood up to defend love, not romantic partners. The following ideas will help single men and women on Valentine’s Day.
1. Treat yourself
Devote some extra time to a neglected hobby, such as a yoga or boxing class. Give yourself the best gift. This could include a trip to the mall, spa or salon. Order some delicious takeout, watch a movie or read a book and relax.
2. Broaden your sense of love
Find the people in your life that you care about and spend time with them. This could be your parents, grandparents or your best buds. Catch up on what’s going on in each other’s lives. Focus on how lucky you are for all the love in your life.
3. Get out of town
Take a mini road trip to a different city. New scenery might relieve stress and open your heart to new experiences.
4. Have a girls/boys night out
Find some friends or college roommates that are also single. Find a bar or restaurant in which you can have fun with a group or by yourself. Look up local clubs and see if they are having any single mixers or drink specials for the night.
5. Throw a party
Make this celebration singles only. Organize a battle of the sexes game night. Round up coed groups of singles and play Wii games all night long.
6. Host a scary movie marathon
Instead of watching the typical romantic stuff, gather up friends and family and watch a list of scary movies, such as “My Bloody Valentine 3-D.” This is a great time to cook up new delicious treats and snacks for your guests.
7. Spread the gift of love
There are many people in the local area that do not have love in their lives or are going through a tragic circumstance. Show them someone cares by visiting the sick and their families at the hospital, attending a fundraiser or giving gifts to children in orphanages.
One fundraiser in the local area includes the Old Hollywood Glam Ball, held Feb. 14-15 at the Packard Museum from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. for 21 and up.
This is an evening of glitz and glam complete with an open bar, a formal dinner, music and dancing and a bachelor auction. Tickets are $60-$75. All proceeds go the charity A Kid Again.
Singles have an opportunity to take Valentine’s Day as a knife to the heart or as a day to celebrate the love they share with others. Having a romantic partner can be beneficial at times, but family and friends can also provide love. Take Valentine’s Day and make it your own.
