Men's tennis off to hot start

A 1-2 start to the season didn’t discourage the men’s tennis team.

Picked to finish third in the Horizon League on the heels of an 18-5 (7-0) campaign in 2012, the Raiders dropped their season-opener at Michigan State on Jan. 12 before making amends with a win over Duquesne on Jan. 19. But that step forward preceded a huge step backward.

The Indiana Hoosiers swept WSU 7-0 on Jan. 23 in Bloomington, IN. The Raiders won only two sets in nine combined singles and doubles matches. Instead of wallowing in defeat, WSU used that experience as motivation and made their opponents pay during the weekend. The Raiders reeled off their own 7-0 wins against Robert Morris and Ohio Dominican on Jan. 26 to push their record to 3-2.

With three meets coming up this weekend, head coach Sean McCaffrey’s group is poised to build on that momentum.

WSU resumes play in Richmond, KY against Eastern Kentucky on Friday. After the meet, the Raiders have a quick turnaround as they return to the South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, OH to play Chicago State and IPFW on Saturday and Sunday.
