Last Sunday, April 7th, another Wright State sorority represented the University by bringing another
community service event to the greater Dayton area.
“Theta Phiesta is the main spring philanthropy event for Theta Phi Alpha,” said Kaytee McBride, the
Philanthropy Chair of Theta Phi Alpha. “Each year, we team up with a different Mexican restaurant to
put a Theta Phi spin on a typical fiesta!”
This event has been ongoing for several years, and, according to McBride, has required a larger venue
each time it is held. Due to this, Don Pablo’s in Beavercreek played the role of host to this year’s Theta
Phiesta.
Several fundraisers occurred at the Theta Phiesta, including a silent auction in which all proceeds will be
donated to Camp Friendship. Additionally, Don Pablos’ gave 10% of all sales to the Theta Phiesta event.
Camp Friendship, as mentioned above, is the main recipient of Theta Phiesta’s hard-earned fundraiser
money. As a camp for 8 to 12-year-olds, Camp Friendship is run by the Glenmary Home Missionaries
in Mississippi. “Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsors this camp and runs it for two full weeks over the
summer, with the money that is raised by chapters nationwide,” stated McBride. “This camp is so dear to
the hearts of our sisters because it services areas like Cincinnati, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; Knoxville,
Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee; Savannah, Georgia; and Richmond, Virginia.”
The camp is designed to give children in the Appalachian Area, one of the poorest areas in the nation, the
opportunity to experience summer camp. All those who participate in the camp are children of families
who would otherwise be unable to send them to camp. “This camp is beneficial in so many ways, and the
Gamma Kappa chapter of Theta Phi Alpha uses Theta Phiesta to do all we can to help give these children
the camp experience that all kids deserve!” said McBride.
