New WWSU director takes over

The direction of the Wright State radio station has changed hands again, as junior Shannon McGrath recently took over as the WWSU General Manager for 2013-2014.

McGrath said she wants to establish a rapport with surrounding businesses as well as gather student opinions for what they would want on the station. McGrath also hopes to spread the word about the organization.

“I know many people on campus don’t even know there is a radio station," McGrath said. “We’re trying to get our name out there and show that the station plays music that people would listen to, and that [the station] is a fun place to be, so we can get more DJ’s.”

McGrath started early with WWSU because of her brother, who previously had a position with the station as well.

“I started freshman year, fall quarter because my brother used to work here. He used to have a director’s position and he got me interested in it, and I fell in love doing it.” McGrath said.

After training, McGrath began her own radio show.

“I went through the training classes for the first quarter, and afterwards I had a show with my best friend and we’ve had a show ever since. We played any type of music and we would have trivia and quotes,” said McGrath.

Despite her history with the station, McGrath was still nervous taking the position as General Manager.

“Honestly, first off, it was a little bit nerve-wracking just because going into any position of power, no matter what you are, you just want to do whatever is best for what you’re a part of,” McGrath said. “After getting the position, seeing all my staff work together and having them behind me working together well, it calmed me down a lot.”

Associate Director for the Office of Student Activities Debbie Lamp said the position is not a small one.

“She’s essentially solely responsible for overseeing everything that happens at the radio station. She does everything from making sure the FCC licenses are up to date, filing paper work and things online and there’s music registration,” Lamp said.

Lamp said she noticed that the station has grown more in collaboration with other campus organizations since McGrath had taken her position.
