Do the U broadens operation

Do the U was held Aug. 23 in the Student Union, spanning the entire Student Union rather than just the Atrium for the first time.

Do the U is a student organization fair that provides one of the first opportunities for freshmen to get involved in campus life at Wright State. The event was organized by the Office of Student Activities as part of the First Weekend festivities.

The festival included performances by the WSU Cheerleading squad and the Emerald Jazz dance team as well as dancing, prizes, minute-to-win-it games, music, food provided by local vendors and a paper airplane throwing contest to end the evening.

In the past, Do the U was held entirely in the Atrium of the Student Union. This year the Assistant Director of Campus Programs for the Office of Student Activities Jack Pence said he decided to use more space to help new students learn how to navigate on their own in the Student Union.

“We used maps and TV’s to drive students to different places,” said Pence.

Some organizations were set up in the Atrium, while others could be found in the Apollo Room or in the hallway outside the Office of Student Activities.

Some students enjoyed the new setup.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, and there is a lot more stuff than I realized,” said freshman English major Juliana Crask.

Some students thought splitting up the event was ill-advised.

“It’s a lot more separated,” said senior French major Laura Gray. “There’s lots of space and not a lot in between.”

Pence acknowledged some limitations of the separated setup.

“It’s kind of hard just because of the way the Union is set up to get a message to the front and the middle,” said Pence.
