Beta Phi Omega, a Greek fraternity on campus, raised more than $100 for the United Rehabilitation Services during its biannual Row-a-Thon.
The 24-hour event, which was located outside of Allyn Hall, ended at noon Thursday.
“We row up and down the moat to keep track of our nautical miles and we raise money for philanthropy,” said Jacob Schuck, current vice president and new member educator for the fraternity. “We have the booth, we have a moat and we have the boat in the moat, and we try to keep someone rowing it for the whole time.”
Most of the money donated at this event came from peer donations. Students donated $4 or $5 to see one of the fraternity members get flipped in the moat. The fraternity also cooked food and offered boat rides for donations given.
With only 10 members in the fraternity, the organization also took this time to advertise. According to Schuck, the brotherhood has been around since 1967 and it is the only local fraternity on campus.
“I enjoy getting in the moat and having some fun with my brothers,” said Schuck, who has been a member for three years. “But it is also good for others to donate and be a part of a good cause. It also gives us [the fraternity] time to bond.”
