The start of the new school year brings with it a week of activities planned for incoming and returning Wright State students. Welcome Week kicked off Thursday, Aug. 22 with First Year Move In and will continue through Sept. 2.
The Office of Student Activities Assistant Director of Campus Programs Jack Pence described Welcome Week as an effort to welcome new and current students back from the summer by giving students the opportunity to meet new people, participate in events, get involved in life on campus and help them adjust to student life.
Though it has been nearly a week since the events began, Welcome Week is far from over. A variety of different activities are planned, such as the Ice Cream Social sponsored by the University Activities Board (UAB) on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Student Union Emerald Room and Open Mic with Amanda Duncan sponsored by Student Weekend Activities Team (SWAT) on Friday, Aug. 30 from 9 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. in the Outdoor Amphitheater.
All of the Welcome Week activities are sponsored by different campus organizations. For new students interested in Greek life, there is the Interfraternity Council (IFC) Open House on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.in the Student Union Atrium, as well as the Panhellenic Council’s Sorority Open House on Thursday, August 29, also from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium.
Both of the open houses follow very similar structures, Pence said.
“[They invite] all of our fraternities and sororities to an event along with the new students interested in Greek Life to come and ask questions to find out what Greek Life is here at Wright State,” said Pence.
When asked which event he would most recommend to WSU students, Pence chose Fall Fest.
“It’s so representative of all of our student organizations,” said Pence. “Fall Fest hits the new and current students’ taste buds just because it gives them that opportunity to meet other people and be outside in this good environment. We have games, inflatables, food and vendors that come on campus and I think everyone likes the opportunity to get free food.”
Fall Fest will be held on Friday, August 30 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the North Lawn.
