The World’s End is “a slice of fried gold”; thumbs up.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost team up again with director Edgar Wright to finish the Cornetto Trilogy with “The World’s End.” The film is about a group of five childhood friends (played by Pegg, Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan) who reunite to attempt to finish the Golden Mile, a strip of pubs in their hometown. Upon their return home they realize that something is not right in the town of Newton Haven; the town has been taken over by robotic duplicates of its citizens.
The Frost/Pegg/Wright trio did not disappoint and once again offered a fun, witty comedy that is a tribute to one of their favorite genres: alien invasion films. The comedy appears to be their take on the form of the 1956 Sci-Fi classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” in a way that doesn’t feel like a remake.
Among the film’s strengths is the chemistry of Pegg and Frost. In the previous two films in the Cornetto Trilogy, Pegg played the straight man of the duo while Nick Frost played the more comedic character. For “The World’s End,” they trade roles and it really shows the theatrical and comedic skill of the two.
The ending left a bit to be desired, but nonetheless, “The World’s End” is a hilarious and enjoyable movie that is definitely worth the price of admission, especially for fans of the Cornetto Trilogy.
