Sports Shorts: Men's basketball to play Georgetown, DePaul in '13

Wright State Director of Athletics Bob Grant said at Friday’s Athletics Council meeting that the complete men’s basketball schedule is not finalized, but that WSU has signed off on a pair of marquee road games.

The Raiders are set to take on Big East powerhouse Georgetown in the Verizon Center on Nov. 13. Georgetown is paying WSU $85,000 to play in Washington D.C., according to Grant. Three days later, the Raiders travel to Chicago to play DePaul.

According to Grant, the ESPN family of networks will continue airing the Horizon League men’s basketball game of the week during the regular season, as well as broadcasting the semifinals and finals of the Horizon League tournament.

The Raiders are set to appear on one of the ESPN networks five times this season.

Women’s basketball

Non-conference road games against Louisville, Xavier and Dayton highlight the 2013-14 Raiders women’s basketball schedule.

Both the Cardinals and the Flyers made the NCAA women’s basketball tournament last season, with the Cardinals losing in the national championship game to Connecticut. Louisville pulled off one of the most memorable upsets in women’s college basketball history when they defeated Brittany Griner’s No.1-ranked Baylor team in the Sweet 16.

Volleyball

Wright State’s volleyball team stands at 1-4 after five matches in as many days during competition at the WCU Invitational in Cullowhee, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday, and against Northern Kentucky Tuesday night.

WSU lost to host Western Carolina 3-0 and UNC Asheville 3-1 on Friday, then fell again to Boston College to open Saturday competition. The Raiders rebounded after the B.C. loss with a 3-0 win over USC Upstate.

Emily Meng tallied 42 assists and Heidi Splinter added 17 kills and 14 digs in the win over the Spartans.

Men’s soccer

The Wright State men’s soccer team was set to open the season on Friday evening to take on the Kentucky Wildcats but the power company altered those plans.

Due to a power outage that prevented the lights from coming on at the stadium, the Raiders’ contest at Kentucky was postponed and the game will be made up Nov. 6. With the postponement, the Raiders will open the season at home Friday against Marshall.

Women’s soccer

The Wright State women’s soccer squad got off to a rough start on its first game in the Pacific Time Zone falling to Pepperdine 1-0 Thursday evening but managed to recover on Sunday to defeat Nevada Sunday afternoon 1-0.

Wright State’s lone goal on the trip came from Emilie Fillion who notched her third goal in four games on Sunday.

The Raiders have concluded their season-opening four-game road stand with a 2-1-1 ledger and are set to return home Thursday evening to host the Western Michigan Broncos.
