Wright State’s club football team finally completed a full contest after a rain out and a pair of cancelations as the Raiders fell to the semi-pro Columbus War Eagles 12-0 Sunday afternoon.
Wright State coach head coach Anthony VanHorn said he is confident the Raiders’ next contest scheduled for Saturday against George Mason will go on as scheduled. The game is scheduled to played under the lights in Morgantown, W Va.
Emotions ran high in the contest as the first half ended with offensive players getting into a verbal altercation on the sideline. Three Wright State police officers responded but did not take any players into custody.
“Football is an emotional game but at the end of the day, we’re family,” VanHorn said. “I just wish it didn’t happen in front of everyone. (The police responding) made it look a lot worse than it was.”
The War Eagles scored a pair of touchdowns, with their first coming in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass after capitalizing on three fourth-down conversions.
Columbus scored again with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter on a touchdown pass down the left sideline to take a 12-0 advantage.
WSU got into the Columbus red zone twice in the second half. The Raiders had a first-and-goal from the Columbus 5 yard-line but the drive stalled after a blocked kick. The Raiders had a turnover-on-downs on their second red zone opportunity.
“Second half, we improved a bit,” Raiders quarterback Nathan Bollheimer said. “I thought we changed the offensive tempo, we drove the ball just couldn’t capitalize in the red zone. We proved we could drive the ball down the field.”
Men’s basketball schedule released
Wright State officially released its men’s basketball 2013-14 regular season schedule late last week. WSU has 15 home contests, 15 away contests, and a neutral-site game this year.
The Raiders play one exhibition game on Nov. 1 versus Findlay before tipping off the regular season against Division III foe Mount St. Joseph on Nov. 10 in the Nutter Center.
The nonconference season wraps up Dec. 29 at home against in-state opponent Bowling Green. The Raiders begin Horizon League play Jan. 2 at home versus Oakland.
