The Wright State men’s hockey team fell short on student night to Dayton in a 4-2 loss on Oct. 4.
The Raiders got off to a slow start in the first period, falling down three goals to the Flyers, but quickly re-grouped to make it 3-2 by the end of the second period.
The Flyers forced WSU in their own defensive zone for much of the first period and forced numerous turnovers to keep the Raiders off the attack.
“The pace was slow and we were giving up the puck a lot in the beginning,” head coach Chris Sands said. “We had a lot more pressure on UD toward the end and started to play in their zone which gave us a lot of opportunities.”
A spark from the crowd was ignited after a shot from freshman Jeremy Watson hit the post and a breakaway ensued with the puck being loose. The Raiders started connecting with a four-check rotation in the offensive zone, during the 3rd period.
“We started working on the neutral zone trap and our guys were reading it well,” Sands said. “We were getting rewarded by getting the puck back and also worked heavily on the defensive zone to slow UD’s pace.”
The loss drops The Raiders down to 0-5 on the season.
WSU begins a six-game road trip and will travel to the University of Pittsburgh Friday.
“We took another step in the right direction and we keep getting better every game,” Sands said. “With the progression we’re making, our goal is to go into Pitt and come together as a team to come away with a win, we need to keep our chins up.”
