Men's basketball: Donlon concerned with effects of television coverage

The Wright State men’s basketball team has added two more games to its television schedule to raise its total of televised contests to 12 for this season, which WSU head coach Billy Donlon said was a concern for his team.

The most recently announced games will be available locally on Dayton CW on Dec. 21 versus UMKC and on Dec. 29 against Bowling Green.

These two games add to the 10 previously scheduled contests that were slated for national television.

“Every night that we are on TV, people will go on the Internet and look up Wright State University,” Donlon said. “I don’t want to be on TV eight times going into the season, I wish they would just announce it the day of the game you’re going to be on TV. I don’t know if I can get our guys’ heads in the building right now.”

Forward Jerran Young said that the attention could affect players' mentality.

“Being on top, people get big headed and go overboard when you really haven’t been doing anything yet,” forward Jerran Young said.

The Raiders’ first game on television will be its road opener against Georgetown of the Big East on Nov. 13. That match will be shown on Fox Sports 1.  Its next road contest on Nov. 16 versus DePaul will be available on regional Fox Sports Networks.

When the Raiders get into Horizon League play, half of their 16 contests will be televised by one of the ESPN networks. The Raiders were slated to finish second in the Horizon League behind Green Bay. Both of Wright State’s contests against Green Bay will be nationally televised. The Jan. 17 game in the Nutter Center will be televised on ESPNU.

When the teams square off on Feb. 1 in Green Bay, that game will be televised on ESPN2. The Horizon League will also have its quarterfinals, semifinals and finals broadcast on the ESPN networks. The Horizon League Championship is slated for either ESPN or ESPN2 on March 11.

According to WSU Director of Athletics Bob Grant, this could be the last year the Horizon League will have a working relationship with ESPN, as their contract with the network expires at the end of the year. He said that the league will look at other options including the newly developed Fox Sports 1 channel, which is broadcasting Big East basketball this year.
