Last year, a resolution to increase pedestrian safety was introduced by JB Saul and Kyle Powell of Student Government. This resolution was eventually passed, but not much progress has been made.
There were four parts to this resolution that would add additional safety devices to the campus:
1. Upgrading light poles at crosswalk locations to high output LED as well as adding additional light poles to locations with a lack of sufficient lighting.
2. Install motion activated LED indicators on signage and imbed LED indicators into the pavement before the busiest crosswalk locations.
3. Modify crosswalks with high reflective “Continental” pattern markings if they are not raised.
4. Insert 12x36 crosswalk signage in the center of the traffic lanes in high traffic areas.
According to Saul, progress has been made on only two points of the resolution.
“Part one was completed, part 2 hasn’t made any progress as of yet,” Saul said, “Only the crosswalk by Lot 4 has been modified so far with a continental pattern, and part 3 hasn’t made any progress yet.”
Eventually all of these safety precautions will be implemented, but it will take some time until completion.
