Raiderthon raises over $50,000 for Dayton Children's Hospital

Wright State Student Government's first Raiderthon, a 15-hour dance marathon that took place in the Apollo Room Saturday and Sunday, raised over $50,000 for Dayton Children's Hospital.

The event took place from Nov. 16 at 10 p.m. to Nov. 17 at 1 a.m.

According to Student Government's Kyle Powell,  an organizer of Raiderthon, the average turnout tends to be around 150-200 people, and the average amount raised is $15,000.

Raiderthon trumped those amounts with over 600 students registered and $50,000 raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, specifically Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Student government set a $50,000 goal before discovering what the expected first-year income was, leading to doubts on whether or not they could meet it.

“When we found out what the average first year was, we wondered if we set our goal too high,” said Powell. “We didn’t know if we could pull it off.”

The students proved to be tenacious in giving to the cause, according to Megan Gray, commuter senator for student government and morale captain during Raiderthon.

“I didn’t expect to see the students that motivated. They were excited, emotional and got really into it,” Gray said.

Raiderthon, according to Powell, had a variety of entertainment and events like live music, DJ’s, dancing, food, raffles and more, which is why Gray believes that the students involved enjoyed themselves and were surprised at the amount of fun they had.
