Dayton is not completely dreary and unappealing for the holiday break. In fact, Dayton is home to several special events, restaurants and activities that can be enjoyed instead of sitting at home wishing you were somewhere warmer.
1. The Dayton Ballet performs The Nutcracker annually at the Schuster Theatre in Dayton. The classic story is performed alongside the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, with $10 backstage tours also available. Opening night is this Friday, Dec. 13 and runs until Sunday, Dec. 22.
2. Riverscape ice skating is located at the Riverscape metro park in downtown Dayton. There is no admission fee on weeknights, and ice skate rentals are only $5. The open-air ice rink will run until Feb. 28, 2014.
3. The lights of Clifton Mills wow tourists and locals alike each Christmas. Featured in Midwest Living, Clifton Mills offers viewers a 3.5 million light spectacle that also includes a Santa Claus museum and a miniature village. The holiday display will be open until New Years Day.
4. $10 carriage rides are available at The Greene every Saturday from 6-10 p.m.
5. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at The Nutter Center Dec. 31, 2013 starting at 2 PM. Tickets beginning as low as $26.
6. Enjoy a meal at a number of strange restaurants, café’s, and dives downtown. The Oregon District is host to a number of eateries with their own schedule of holiday events such as karaoke, trivia, beer tasting nights, art galleries, and live music. Check out The White Lotus, Olive, Thai 9, The Dublin Pub, Blind Bob's or Lily's Bistro.
