Men’s Tennis: Raiders receive an ‘eye opener’ going into HL play

SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The Wright State men’s tennis team received a rude awakening Sunday during its 6-1 loss at crosstown rival Dayton Sunday.

Wright State goes into Horizon League play Saturday at Youngstown State with a 6-8 record.

Losing to the Flyers the way the Raiders frustrated head coach Sean McCaffrey following the contest. The loss to Wright State’s crosstown rivals broke a three-game winning streak the Raiders had over the Flyers dating back to 2008.

“We haven’t dropped more than a point on the men’s side to Dayton since I have been at Wright State,” McCaffrey said. “Losing was tough. They came extremely ready to play.”

Wright State dropped two of its three double matches with Myles Harris and Dan Gilbert pairing in the No. 3 doubles spot for the win. Losing the critical doubles point carried over to singles play where the Raiders dropped five out of six.

“Once you have dropped that doubles point, momentum started to really shift to them,” McCaffrey said. “Anytime a momentum shift happens with these guys, it can change the whole scope of the match and it did.”’

With conference play taking focus, McCaffrey is pushing his squad not to take anyone lightly after losing three out of four going into conference play.

“It hurts but it is an eye opener,” he said. “I think we’re going to see a new focus from the guys that they can’t take anyone lightly. But there is no cakewalk. We just lost 6-1 to a team that we have beaten teams that had beaten them 7-0.”
