Coming off a weekend at Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Invitational, the softball team went 1-3 during a four-game stretch, with its lone win against Marist.
After a 2-13 start to the season, Wright State softball head coach Lynn Curylo is looking to improved focus of her players.
“This past weekend, I think we were a little lazy with our focus,” Curylo said. “I’d hope that we would have performed a lot better with better results in terms of the Winthrop tournament, we just weren’t consistent with our approach.”
With a string of tournaments coming to an end, the softball team is looking for a way to regain their focus and motivation with the conference games approaching.
“If we’re going to win, we need to be consistent with our focus and disciplined,” Curylo said.
Senior pitcher Krystian DeWitt, who is coming back from an injury, began to step up in the Winthrop Invitational.
“We got her further [in the game], which is a positive, it means she’s building her stamina,” Curylo said.
Outfielder Jess Gorman also showed strides, getting two hits and two RBIs during the weekend at Bowling Green, Ky.
“Gorman is a igniter for us, getting those big hits,” Curylo said.
Junior Kortney Tackett pulled through for the Raiders getting four hits and three RBIs.
“Tackett has continued to improve since Florida, not only behind the plate but at the plate,” said Curylo. “That’s somebody else who I though kind of stands out [at the Winthrop tournament].”
With 31 at bats, five hits and one RBI, junior Reagan Stofcheck has continued to stay consistent since the beginning of the season.
“Probably the most consistent player on our team right now is Reagan Stofcheck,” Curylo said. “She’s been getting the bat on the ball and working counts. I hope she is someone who the players are paying attention to because she is having success because she is being consistent in her approach.”
With former opponents being major conference teams such as Tennessee, Ohio State, and Binghamton, the softball team is ready to head back to Ohio for some Horizon League competition.
“We want as many games as we can to get us ready for March 22, for the start of conference. It’s what we want, but it’s just a matter of if we are using it wisely,” said Curylo.
The Raiders will head to Bloomington, Ind. next to play in the Hoosier Classic, where they will be up against Toledo, Indiana and Michigan State.
Then the Raiders will return to their home state for the first conference game on March 20, in Oxford, Ohio against Miami.
