Wright State junior guard Kim Demmings was named the Horizon League Player of the Year, Ivory James and Tay'ler Mingo also received honors, as the conference released its official list of award winners Monday.
Demmings lead the Horizon League in scoring during conference (23.4 points per game) and non-conference (22.4 points per game). She also moved ahead of Tiffany Webb for most points scored in a single season and continues to add to her total.
“I’m happy and very grateful, but I [give a] shoutout to my teammates because without them I wouldn’t have any of this success,” Demmings said. “Shoutout to the team and coaches for being onboard and having my back. I’m onboard and I have their back.”
Demmings said her personal accomplishments have moved to the back burner, in terms of importance, in preparation for the Raiders’ matchup against Milwaukee Wednesday night during the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Tournament.
“We don’t really get all into honors and awards. We just kinda stay humble and, as it comes…we’re grateful that we get it, but we also stay humble because we’re playing for a bigger cause and the bigger cause is bigger than me,” Demmings said. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for my teammates and my coaches, I wouldn’t have that award.”
Along with Demmings, James was named to the Horizon League First Team. James averaged 17.7 points per game for WSU during the 2013-14 season and started all 31 contests for the Raiders.
Mingo was named to the conference’s All-Defensive team. Mingo ranked second in the Horizon League in steals with 2.4 takeaways per game, while averaging 14 points per game.
“It’s good for them to get recognized,” Raiders head coach Mike Bradbury said. “They’ve had good seasons, to date, and hopefully that continues.”
