Wright State junior midfielder Wes Cain made up for a mistake he made last week by finishing a scoring opportunity in the 97th minute in WSU’s 1-0 win over Duquesne Friday night.
Teammate Eric Lynch found Cain in the box and Cain sent the ball past Duquesne goalkeeper Sam Frymier six minutes into overtime to give WSU its fifth win of the season. The goal sent the WSU bench into a frenzy as Cain performed flips to the delight of the crowd.
Cain had a similar opportunity on Sept. 12 in a contest at San Diego State. In that contest, he missed a wide-open chance. Moments after Cain’s missed shot, SDSU handed WSU its first loss of the season. On Friday, Cain was not up for an encore performance.
“I ended up missing the chance and it was playing through my mind the whole time tonight,” Cain said. “When I got that chance, I made sure I put it in. I wasn’t going to make that mistake again.”
Early in the game, Cain was not playing to head coach Bryan Davis’ standards.
“Wesley, we really got into him at halftime because we weren’t getting the production out of that position,” Davis said. “It was very fitting that Wesley finished the game the way he did.”
Davis said he was happy with the way Cain redeemed himself Friday.
“For him to get that moment again two games later says a lot about the kid. Wesley is coming along nicely,” Davis said. “Also the team, different guys come on different days.”
Friday marked the second consecutive contest WSU won in overtime.
Cain’s goal marked the ninth WSU player in seven contests to score a goal. With so many players capable of scoring, Davis finds that his squad is tough to defend.
“You can’t really game plan for us; Duquesne is a really good team and (their head coach) Chase Brooks is in my opinion one of the better young coaches,” Davis said. “For us to come out the way we did against a well coached team, I think it makes me very proud tonight."
The Raiders face one more nonconference test before the start of Horizon League play. WSU visits Northern Kentucky Tuesday before travelling to Detroit Sept. 27. While the Raiders have the best overall record among Horizon League teams at 5-1-1, both UIC and Milwaukee have received national accolades for their play.
“I am so excited for conference play,” Lynch said. “This is the time to make our mark. Beat UIC and Milwaukee who are ranked and get our name out there and win the Horizon League.”
