Raiders swept in HL home opener

The Wright State volleyball team lost its seventh consecutive match Friday against UIC. Wright State was swept 3-0 by the Flames in the Raiders’ conference home opener giving them an overall record of 3-15 and 0-4 in the Horizon League.

The C.J. McLin Gym was packed for the Raiders’ first home game since Sept. 6.

“It’s always great coming back home, we were away for over a month,” said WSU head coach Susan Clements.

It was also the first Raiders match featured on ESPN3 as part of the Horizon League’s new agreement with ESPN.

The Raiders showed lots of energy making big plays and keeping it close throughout the first set. Momentum went back and forth as there were eight ties and three lead changes but UIC made the last run and held on to win the set 25-22.

The Flames dominated the final two sets winning 25-14 and 25-18. The Raiders played hard, but could not overcome all of the errors.

“We have to manage the game better and find a rhythm. It really hurts when we get on a run and then have a mental error,” Clements said.

UIC improved to 2-3 in the conference and improving to 8-12 overall. The Flames were led by Sara Sternard with kills. The Raiders were led by freshman Katie Klusman who contributed seven kills.

“We have to improve on serving and passing. Those two parts of our offense are really struggling right now,” Clements said when asked about what the team looking to improve on.

The Raiders will look to bounce back at home again tomorrow, hosting Valparaiso at 4.
