Following its amazing comeback-win at Green Bay last week, Wright State fell short in a hard fought 3-1 loss to Youngstown State.
The Penguins are currently tied for first place in the league, while the Raiders are tied for last and were looking for their first home league win of the season. The Raiders had a slow start to the match and Youngstown State dominated the first set winning 25-17.
In the second set, the Raiders finally found their groove making a comeback from down eight to take an 18-17 lead. From there, the set went back and forth with both teams trading the lead. The Penguins took control of the lead last though, and won the set 26-24.
"We started to find our rhythm in the second set and it carried over to the third and fourth set," Wright State coach Susan Clements said.
The Raiders hit their stride in the third set and took the momentum on their side. Led by Megan Hopkins, with 15 kills for the game, the Raiders won the third set 25-22.
With the momentum on their side, the Raiders started off the fourth set taking the lead 5-2. The Penguins quickly responded and took the lead back. The set went back and forth until both teams were locked at 21-21. Lexi Egler of the Penguins helped Youngstown State pull away at the end though, giving them 25-22 win. She led all scorers with 18 kills.
The Raiders team has made a lot of progress over the season and it is showing on court. Last week they won their first ever conference game defeating Green Bay in a spectacular comeback after being down 0-2. Haley Garr led the Wright State with 17 kills, but three other Raiders recorded double-digit kills, as well.
"We were focused on getting a win in the league and we did that. Now we need to focus on taking advantage of being home," said Clements.
The Raiders will get a chance to do that tomorrow as they host Cleveland State at 4 p.m.
