Wright State held the 4th annual Wright Brothers Day in the Student Union Oct. 2, with various exhibits and a speech to honor the innovations of the university’s namesake.
This event had significant meaning to the Wright State community, according to director of communications of the National Aviation Heritage Area Timothy Gaffney, who gave the keynote address.
“Wright Brothers Day gives students, faculty and staff at Wright State a chance to connect with their heritage and remember that the Wright brothers symbolize the spirit of innovation. For my organization, it's a great opportunity to make students aware of the many aviation heritage sites they can visit here in the National Aviation Heritage Area, some of them very close to Wright State,” said Gaffney.
The event also highlights the connection between aviation heritage and the future, as represented by the aerospace research and technology still going on at Wright State, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and across the region. according to Gaffney.
The Wright State Special Collections and Archives, which has the largest Wright Brothers collection in the world, displayed one of the exhibits. The exhibit is a tool for educating students about the Wright Brothers, according to the Head of Special Collections and Archives Dawne Dewey.
"We come here every year to put up an exhibit of the original photographs in our collection to help teach people about what the Wright brothers did and why that is important,” said Dewey.
