After three years and 21 losses, Wright State won its first conference home game in that span Friday defeating Green Bay 3-0. The win marked WSU’s second conference win of the season; both wins were against the Phoenix.
“It feels great. This team has been really close so many times this season and they had a lot of confidence coming in against Green Bay,” WSU head coach Susan Clements said. “
WSU swept the season series against the Phoenix.
After WSU took a 2-0 lead on Green Bay Friday, Clements reminded her squad of when Wright State responded to its 2-0 deficit versus the Phoenix earlier in the season. The Raiders went onto win that match 3-2.
“We talked about it in the intermission that they were in the same spot we were,” Clements said. “We can’t let them gain momentum, we have to finish this thing out after three.”
Green Bay nearly took the third set as the Phoenix took a 24-22 lead. The Raiders staved off a pair of set points in a row followed by another pair of set points. After winning all four set points, WSU closed out as Green Bay had an attack error that ended the match.
“I think we didn’t let the moment overwhelm us,” Clements said. “We stayed focus, siding out and we played the best defense we have played all season. We were scrappy.”
Wright State closed out the first two sets strong. In the first set, WSU went on a 6-1 run to put the first set out of reach. The Raiders won the first set 25-19 after Ashley Langjahr scored off an assist from Maddie Lohmeier.
WSU trailed for much of the second set. The Raiders went on a 9-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. After Green Bay staved off three set points, Langjahr and Lohmeier linked once again to wrap up the set.
Wright State finishes its season tomorrow versus Milwaukee.
