Lot 11 car thefts: preventative strategies

Wright State's Lot 11, behind Millet Hall and the Dunbar Library, has seen two separate vehicles thefts within a week of one another.

The first theft occurred Jan. 7 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., during which a 2008 dark gray Toyota Camry (Plate No. FNB 2647) was taken from WSU Communication and Development Coordinator Susan Paul.

The second theft occurred Jan. 14 between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.. Dr. Sharon Lynette Jones, also of the College of Liberal Arts, lost her 2009 white Ford Fusion (No. DKZ 3168) in the same lot.

The WSU Police Department is responding to these crimes with extra patrols and deeper investigation into every lead they can find, along with an increased monitoring of Lot 11, according to Crime Prevention Manager Sergeant Patrick Ammon.

"Everyone should be attentive and report anything or anyone suspicious," Ammon said. "Keep keys with you at all times, and when getting in and out of the vehicle make sure that you have your keys with you."

Ammon advises people to keep house keys on a separate ring from vehicle keys for safety. "This way if one set is lost or stolen, both sets are not together."

If remote fobs or keyless entries are lost or stolen, thieves may drive around parking lots to see what vehicle they go to. It is advisable to be very careful and recheck throughout the day to make sure they are still in your possession.

Additional safety tips provided by WSUPD:

- Always keep your vehicle locked with your windows and sunroof closed. - Remove your keys from the ignition. Make sure you have your keys and take them with you. - Park in a well-lit area. - Report suspicious behavior to the police. - Program the police department's phone number (937) 775-2111 into your cell phone.
