Women's basketball: Raiders season ends in WNIT 1st round

TOLEDO, Ohio - Wright State fell short 72-64 in its WNIT game against Toledo on Friday. Toledo guard Brenae Harris posted a triple-double in the game by collecting 11 rebounds, 11 assists and scoring 16 points to lead her team to the next round of the tournament.

“It’s disappointing,” said WSU head coach Mike Bradbury. “This is not what we had planned. We played hard enough. We weren’t good enough today.”

In the opening minutes of the game, Toledo guard Jay Bravo-Harriott hit a jumper to put the Rockets up 2-0. WSU retaliated with a 9-1 run in the next 3:03 to gain its largest lead of the game of six. Toledo responded with an 11-2 run in the next 4:14 to regain its lead until WSU guard Courtney Boyd hit a jumper with 10:21 left in the half to tie the game at 17.

“We struggled offensively,” said Boyd. “I think our effort was good, we just couldn’t get shots to fall.”

For the next 3:08 the teams traded baskets each scoring seven points to tie the game at 24. Toledo closed out the half with a 17-6 run in the last 7:36 for a 41-33 advantage at the break.

“We missed wide open shot after wide open shot,” said Bradbury. “We were horrible offensively.”

The Rockets opened the second half on a 4-0 run to gain their largest lead of the game with 12. In the next 5:48, WSU went on a 12-5 run to cut the lead down to five. With 8:20 left WSU cut the deficit to three, but allowed the Rockets to go on a 13-6 run in the next 4:45 putting WSU down seven with 3:09 to go. Toledo never looked back.

“It was tough,” said Mingo. “I personally got a little frustrated with some things that didn’t go my way but it happens, sometimes you’re off.”

The Rockets shot 37.3 percent from the floor with four players scoring in double-digits. They outrebounded WSU by 12 with 14 by guard Ana Capotosto. Mingo finished with 18 points and five assists in her final game as a Raider. Boyd finished with 14 points and Tayler Stanton gathered 15 rebounds.

“I’m extremely proud,” said Bradbury. “I couldn’t be more proud of a team than this.”

The Raiders (25-9) have played their last game this season after the loss to Toledo. WSU has five seniors exiting the program; Mingo, Boyd, Stanton, Abby Jump and Breanna Stucke.

“It’s something to talk about now when you beat Wright State,” said Mingo. “We’ve been fighting the odds all year. We all felt that we could continue to play but everything can’t go your way all of the time.”
