Horizon League to add 10th team

Wright State Athletics Director Bob Grant said this morning at today’s public Athletics Council meeting that the Horizon League is adding a 10th member. Grant would not name the university that will be added to the conference.

He did tell members of the council that the new 10th member of the league will be within bussing distance from Wright State. He added that the league will announce the 10th member by the end of May.

A message has been left for a league spokesperson.

The move does not come as a surprise as league commission Jonathan LeCrone told reporters at last month’s men’s basketball conference tournament that the league was becoming more active in its search to add a 10th member. Many coaches in men’s and women’s basketball see a 10th team being necessary to create an even scheduling process.

“For us, it has to be about a financial fit, a competitive fit, about a sport fit, a geographic fit, about a travel fit,” LeCrone said over a month ago. “We are in an active phase where maybe 12 months ago, we were in a study phase.”
