Men's basketball notebook: Vest makes it official

Wright State announced Friday that Dayton Chaminade Julienne guard Alan Vest has signed a national letter of intent with the Raiders for the 2015-16 season. He will be joined by Youngstown Ursuline guard Mark Hughes for WSU's freshman class in the fall.

Hughes was on the AP's Division III First Team, and Vest was on the Second Team in 2015.

Vest is the son of WSU Hall of Fame member Mark Vest, and brother of former Raider Matt Vest (2010-14).

"Alan will bring a toughness, work ethic and passion that we are accustomed to seeing with the players in our program,” WSU head coach Billy Donlon said.  “He will be able to play multiple positions because he has been so well coached at Chaminade-Julienne by coach Joe Staley.”

Dayton CJ went to the Division III state semifinals in March. Vest averaged 16.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game.

"I know that Wright State has a great basketball program, has a great coaching staff, great guys on the team and great facilities. I would not have chosen anything different,” Vest said.

Vest had previously announced a verbal commitment to Wright State. He was unsure whether a scholarship would be open for him or not. Two weeks ago, guards Mark Howell and Grant Evans left WSU's program, opening a pair of scholarships.

Mullins joins UIC

After five seasons with Wright State, assistant coach Brendan Mullins has left WSU to take a similar position with Illinois-Chicago. The announced was official made by UIC on Friday.

Mullins joins newly-installed head coach Steve McClain's staff.

"I am excited to have Brendan on the UIC basketball staff," said McClain in a statement. "He brings an intimate knowledge of the Horizon League and the type of high-level energy we need."

Mullins is a native of nearby Downes Grove, Illinois.
