10 dorm tips you need to know before you move in

Being on your own is an exciting and sometimes terrifying thought. Make sure you’re prepared for this big step by searching for tips online or starting with the ones below:

  1. As the time comes around to start packing your belongings, consider using a different colored duct tape on boxes that have priority opening. This includes your first couple changes of clothes, toiletries, etc.
  2. Talk with your new roommates about creating a bulletin board with a calendar, everyone’s class schedule and any other important information.
  3. Living in a dorm allows a certain level of creativity that you might have not been allowed before. Decorating your space can involve lights, posters and any other knickknacks that you fancy.

“Every fall there’s this big poster sale in the Quad,” senior Eric Jensen said, “They have movie posters, famous art pieces and anything that suits your interest.”

  1. First-Aid Kit: Get a plastic toolbox with compartments and fill it with Band-Aids, creams, over-the-counter meds (such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen), gauze, tape, scissors, etc.
  2. Use your dorm for the main and best purpose it’s designed for: sleep! According to Brown University, getting the proper amount of rest is the hardest part for college students and it’s reflected in their academics.
  3. To keep your dorm room smelling fresh, use a car deodorant clip on the floor vent.
  4. Consider gathering all the take-out menus from around the area (or as you first eat at each of them) so that they are always on hand.
  5. Don’t expect your new roomie to be your best friend, but be sure that you communicate with them on chores and regular dorm information. This will make your living quarters much more comfortable.
  6. Once your fall schedule is set in stone, figure out what day/night will be your laundry time. Setting aside this time will ensure that it will get done. Also, be on time to retrieve your clothes or they could end up on the dirty ground.
  7. Enjoy the Dayton-area and make new friends. “Living on campus is really cool because of how central it is,” junior Paul Conrady said, “Everything is right here and it’s very convenient.”
