First the Kylie Jenner lip challenge…and now this! Women are using Crayola colored pencils soaked in warm water as eyeliner. Claiming that the pencils are “non-toxic,” some women are using them to create colorful make-up looks for under $5.
“Colored pencils are safe to use on your skin, or on your face because it’s non-toxic. Companies literally make it so little kids can eat it and be fine, so you guys can feel 100 percent safe…beat that Sephora!” YouTube personality Rclbeauty101 said in her video “DIY: Make eyeliner out of colored pencils!”
However, Crayola had a different opinion. In an official statement, Crayola refuted the claim that their colored pencils were safe make-up alternatives.
“Makeup goes through specific and rigorous testing because it is intended to be used on the skin,” the statement said. “Because they were never meant to be used as makeup, our colored pencils or crayons have not been tested in the same way and should not be used as a cosmetic.”
Regardless of Crayola’s warning to the general population, the colored pencil eyeliner has become a hit. However, with no proper testing to prove that it is, in fact, safe, make-up wearers should still buy regular eyeliner like the rest of us.
