Things to do within 5 miles of WSU

  1. Huffman Dam and Huffman MetroPark
Only four miles from WSU, nature abounds at Huffman MetroPark with its lake, access to the Mad River and nature trails. Bird watching and picnics are a popular activity, as well as fishing for some pretty big fish—but keep your eyes peeled! You might just see some other wildlife on the river as well.

  1. Russ Nature Reserve in Beavercreek
Take a left on Kemp Rd and there it is. The reserve is perfect for taking your dog for a walk, or getting your kids out of the house. Creative, woodland forts and children’s activities abound in the clearing, as well as winding trails that lead out to a large field where wildlife might be spotted.

  1. Wright Brothers Memorial
Less than three miles from campus and sitting on Tate Hill is the Wright Brothers Memorial. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Sites in 1974, due to its proximity to several Adena Indian mounds nearby. It is the perfect spot for a picnic, located just off Kauffman Rd.

  1. Take a trip to Foy's
In the heart of downtown Fairborn, the string of Foy’s stores sit waiting to be explored. Ranging from a candy shop to a Halloween and costume store, Foy’s beckons the adventurous college student to make a visit soon.

  1. Linh’s Bistro
Located on Airway Rd, not three miles from WSU, is the family-owned Vietnamese restaurant. The menu is extensive and so are the flavors. Make sure to stop in early on your lunch break, or you might have to wait for a seat!

  1. Wartinger Park in Beavercreek
For those with a knack for history, Wartinger Park is the perfect fit. The historical structures on this four-acre lot date back as early as 1803. Several times a year, the old buildings are opened up to the public, but until then, history buffs and adventurers alike will have to satisfy themselves with exploring the grounds and gardens.

  1. Fairborn Community Park
The community park off Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd is a whopping 206 acres, complete with playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, disc golf courses, soccer fields and ponds for fishing. (Among others!) Shelters can be reserved for events.
