With a final score of 5-2 over Japan Sunday, the United States women’s soccer team became the women’s World Cup champions, their third title overall and first since 1999.
Midfielder Carli Lloyd made three goals early in the game, the first hat trick ever in a women’s final, accompanied by a goal in the 14th minute by fellow midfielder Lauren Holiday. Goalkeeper Hope Solo had three saves on goal, while Japanese goalkeeper Kaihori only had two.
In the history of the competition, the U.S. is the first team to successfully win three women’s World Cups.
