WSU Women’s Center: New director announced

Wright State is now introducing Dr. Nicole Carter, the new Director of the Women’s Center on campus.

Carter has a Ph.D. in Educational Studies as well as a master’s degree in Women’s and Gender Studies. Carter says that through her studies, she was able to explore the lives of women who struggled and how they managed through their struggles.

“These women were empowering, and dedicated their lives to empowering women from all walks of life through fighting against objectification,” said Carter. “I focused on the intersections of identity because I recognized that I, myself, am an intersectional being, and that any focus on women's experiences and rights must explore gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, ability/disability, and so much more.”

Carter says that she has been inspired by feminist public artists and performers, such as: Suzanne Lacy (visual artist), Jessica Care Moore (poet) and Mahogany Jonz (rapper).

The search for a new director took place over the summer and was first announced by Dr. Kimberly Barrett, Vice President for Multicultural Affairs & Community Engagement, at the end of last week.

“As the new Director, I plan to continue the programs that already exist on campus, but I will also create support groups for Women of Color (faculty, staff, and students), Women with Disabilities (faculty, staff, and students), and International Women (faculty, staff, and students),” said Carter. She also plans to more community partnerships along with a larger digital presence.

Carter says she chose Wright State for a few reason:

  1. The Women’s Center follows a collaborative model with the Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies program
  2. The Women’s Center will allow me to continue my work as an activist, advocate, academic, and artist because the programs through the Center and the role itself calls for me to use my expertise in these areas
  3. Wright State is close to Detroit, Michigan, my hometown
  4. The students, faculty and staff have been so supportive, which she thrives on
She added that for the campus, her favorite part is the Starbucks in the library and the underground tunnel. “I love coffee and I hate rain and snow,” Carter said.

Carter is excited to be at Wright State and hopes to better the campus with her work. “I am dedicated to supporting all members of the campus community, and I hope that all members of the campus community take the time to utilize the services of the Center,” Carter said.
