Wright State University Alumni and associates band together to make music described as “funkadelic soul pop.” Their music lives up to its genre-twisting description in “Wretched Enough to Know Better.”
The album opens with a proud declaration of local pride. The first track, “Dayton, Ohio,” is a funk rendition that describes city and its different locations. There is a lot of energy and fun in this first track, which represents what their live shows aim for. Many of the songs on the album inspire dancing and feel like they would be a good backtrack for dance clubs.
“Broken Glass,” one of the album’s more subdued songs, still inspires movement. The blues featured in this track is sappy-sweet in a good way. It reminds a listener of high school dances, even though the content of the song is not the most optimistic. Fizzy synth sounds accompanying soft rhythm guitar make this track feel like it belongs in an 80s teen movie.
“Wretched Enough to Know Better,” is not afraid to depart from form. “Superhero,” is a rocky, jam track with operatic, frenzied male falsettos. Though the falsetto feels a little out of control, it is still a fun track to listen to.
All in all, The Wretched Few’s debut album is great background music for a groove session in the backyard or a fun night with friends.
