Volleyball falls 3-1 to Cleveland State

The Raiders fought hard but could not surpass one of the better teams in the conference as they lost 3-1 to Cleveland State at McLin Gym on Saturday, Oct. 10.

“We gave a great effort out there,” head coach Susan Clements said.  “They’re the best team in the league for a reason.”

WSU jumped ahead 1-0 after taking the first set 25-21 but Cleveland State responded strong in the second set with 19 kills taking the set 25-21 to even the score.

“We went in with a good game plan,” Clements said.  “We just had compounding errors in crucial moments.”

After the break things started to tense up as the third set consisted of six ties and two lead changes.  The Raiders battled to keep things close but lost the set 25-23.

Cleveland State jumped ahead 19-15 in the fourth set to put pressure on WSU to keep the match alive but the Raiders could not overcome the deficit losing 25-19.

“We’re right there with them,” Clements said.  “If we would have cleaned up some moments on our side of the net that match could have been ours and we could have been in control of it.”

After beginning the season 11-4 Wright State has now lost five of their last six games since Horizon League Conference play began.

“I feel like we’re closing the gap between were the top team is and where we are,” Clements said.

The Raiders will be back in action at McLin gym on Tuesday, Oct. 13 as they host Youngstown State (7-13) at 7 p.m.
