Wright State’s women’s basketball team got off to a hot start in their season opener, but cooled off down the stretch as the Raiders loss to Miami (FL) 67-80 Friday afternoon.
The Raiders (0-1) jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter, before the Hurricanes closed the gap on a 13-6 run to close the quarter.
Wright State held a 30-29 advantage before a three-pointer from Miami’s Laura Conelius put Miami in front for the rest of the game.
Miami led by as many as 11 points, before Wright State pulled within three points with just six minutes left in the fourth quarter. A 13-0 run would erase any hope the Raiders had for another resurgence, unfortunately.
Raiders guard Kim Demmings led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting. Demmings also reached a major milestone in being only the second Raider ever to score more than 2,000 career points. Symone Denham had 17 points while Richelle van der Keijk posted 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders.
The Raiders travel back to Ohio for a battle with Kent State Tuesday Nov. 17 at 11 a.m.
