Wright State’s women’s basketball team used a second-half rally to upset No. 24 George Washington 77-71 in the final game of the Lone Star Showcase Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders trailed by as much as 16 points in the first quarter after the Colonials went on a 25-8 run, building a 27-11 lead.
The Raiders clawed their way back into it in the second quarter, trailing 42-33 at the half.
The Raiders shot 33 percent in the first half compared to 51 percent by George Washington.
Trailing 55-48 going into the final quarter, Wright State used a 12-7 run, capped off by a three-point play by freshman guard Emily Vogelpohl, to make it 62-60 with 4:47 remaining. The Raiders tied the game at 64 on a basket by senior guard Kim Demmings and two made free throws by Vogelpohl.
A three-point play from the Colonials gave them their final lead of the game, as Wright State scored the next six points to go up 70-67.
Saturday’s win was the second win in program history over a ranked team, the first being a January, 25 2003-win over No. 16 Green Bay.
Demmings led all scorers with a season high 32 points, 14 of which came in the final period. Vogelpohl tied her season-high with 17 points while Antania Hayes chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Raiders (6-2) come back home Dec. 4 to face Butler at 5 p.m.
