Wright State men’s basketball team had four players score in double-figures as senior guard JT Yoho led all scorers with 22 points in the Raiders 83-47 victory over Bowling Green at the Nutter Center on Sunday, Dec. 20.
“If you can hold teams under 30 in both halves you’re going to be in almost every game you play,” head coach Billy Donlon said. “That’s a big goal of ours and it’s easier said than done. Give our kids all of the credit.”
Senior forward Joe Thomasson finished with 13 points and 6 assists while sophomore guards Mark Alstork scored 19 and Grant Benzinger scored 11.
“Any given night, anyone can go off,” Yoho said. “That’s the good thing about this team. If one of us doesn’t bring it, there’s always someone right there to step up.”
The Falcons took a 5-0 lead in the first 1:21 but Thomasson retaliated with seven straight points in the next 2:50 to give the Raiders their first lead of the game.
Over the next seven minutes, Benzinger made two 3 pointers, Yoho made one and slammed a dunk down. After a pair of free throws by Thomasson, the Raiders led 27-14 with 6:38 remaining in the half.
Bowling Green battled back with an 11-3 run in the next five minutes as junior guard Ismail Ali scored seven straight points in a 3:22 span. The Raiders took a 35-27 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Yoho came out firing in the second half with eight straight points within the first 3:04.
“It’s always a good night when your shot goes in,’ Yoho said. “My teammates found me so I give a lot of credit to them.”
The Raiders dominated the half with one of their best shooting performances of the season making nine of their first 11 shot attempts; four being 3 pointers. They finished the half only missing five field goal attempts and out-scored the Falcons 48-20.
“We just found each other,”Alstork said. “Playing with chemistry and getting to know everybody’s spots. That’s a big credit to the whole team and credit to the fans too.”
With 5:14 remaining, Alstork drove hard to the basket, drew the foul and completed the play to give the Raiders a 70-40 advantage; Donlon pulled the starters after the free throw.
The Raiders bench found success in the final five minutes by extending their largest lead of the night to 38 points.
Wright State (5-7) will be back in action at the Nutter Center on Tuesday, Dec. 22 as they host Murray State (5-6) at 7 p.m.
