Two players scoring career-highs in points and six players scoring in double digits led the Wright State women’s basketball team to a dominant 107-44 victory over Cincinnati Christian at the Nutter Center on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
Sophomore forward Lexi Smith and freshman guard Mackenzie Taylor each scored 20 points and set new career-highs for the Raiders. Guard Baylee Bennett led the Eagles with 20 points.
“It’s a good experience but I didn’t play a perfect game,” Taylor said. “As a team we still need to improve.”
“She (Taylor) continues to get better,” head coach Mike Bradbury said. “She needs to make shots for us. She’s been playing 15 plus minutes a game and those aren’t mop up minutes. I think she’s going to be a really good player.”
Smith recorded her first double-double of the season and the third of her career as she collected a career-high 14 rebounds along with her 20 points.
“Lexi excels in a game like this because she plays hard all of the time and she wasn’t undersized today,” Bradbury said.
The game was tied at nine after 4 minutes and 18 seconds passed but the Raiders offense got hot and ended the quarter on a 21-2 run to gain a 19 point advantage headed into the second.
The Raiders continued their run with 10 straight points within the first 4:20 until a three pointer by guard Lexie Doddridge got the Eagles on the board. The basket would be the Eagles only field goal of the quarter as WSU held them to just five total points in the quarter taking a 52-16 lead at halftime.
The second half was similar to the first as the Raiders were too much for the Eagles to handle. WSU out-scored them 33-11 in the third quarter and 22-17 in the fourth. The Raiders held Cincinnati Christian to 22 percent shooting for the game and out-scored them 78-10 in the paint.
Wright State had six players score in double-figures including Smith and Taylor. Freshman guard Emily Vogelpohl scored 14 points while senior guard Kim Demmings and junior center Richelle van der Keijl each scored 12. Junior forward Antania Hayes scored 10 and has recorded double-digit points in six straight games.
“We’re just trying to develop some depth and hopefully we’re going in the right direction,” Bradbury said.
Wright State (8-2) extended their home winning streak to 5-0 on the year with 13 straight wins dating back to last season. They take a four game winning streak into their matchup at Eastern Kentucky (4-2) on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m.
