Wright State women’s basketball turned a two-point first-half deficit into a 66-53 win over Butler Friday evening.
The Raiders started off struggling from the field, shooting just 7-21 compared to Butler’s 7-11 and 4-5 from three-point range. Surprisingly, the Raiders only trailed by two at the break.
Head coach Mike Bradbury offered few words in explaining how the Raiders stayed close.
“We beat them up on the boards. We didn’t shoot it well and they did,” Bradbury said, “But we got so many more shots that allowed them to shoot 50 percent and us 30 percent and still be in the game."
“We just shot a ton more shots.”
The second quarter was just as back-and-forth as the first, with both teams scoring just 15 points in the quarter. It was the third quarter that saw the Raiders finally turn things around.
Wright State out-scored Butler 24-9 in the period behind senior guard Kim Demmings and freshman guard Emily Voglepohl scoring seven points each in the period.
“At half time we really adjusted the game plan and made them uncomfortable in the second half,” Bradbury said. “That allowed us to make a run in the third quarter and get a little distance.
That distance went a long way for the Raiders in closing the game, as the fourth quarter wasn’t as fruitful as the third. Both teams scored just 11 points—six of which came from Demmings.
Demmings finished with a team-high 20 points on 6-17 shooting. Vogelpohl chipped in 14 points on an efficient 6-8 shooting with two from behind the arc.
Wright State (7-2) stay home for a 12 noon match-up with Cincinnati Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
