“Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” has opened up many questions that fans of the series desperately want the answer to. So, to help ease questioning minds until Episode VIII comes along, here are what the nerdy people of the internet think is happening.
Rey is Luke/Leia/Obi-wan’s daughter
One of the biggest questions people walked out of theater asking is “Who is Rey?” Rey exhibits incredible force powers for someone who doesn’t appear to have Jedi training, considering she was able to defeat Kylo Ren, a trained Sith apprentice, with her first go at swinging a lightsaber. To some, her abilities imply that she is related to some of the strongest Jedi in the galaxy.
There is no clear consensus on who parented Rey, but Luke is the most probable conclusion. Rey finds and uses Luke’s lightsaber and wears a Rebel pilot helmet in the beginning. Both Luke and Rey are trapped on desert planets that they eventually leave and discover
Rey spent a whole movie with Han Solo and Leia and neither of them hinted at being her parents. Despite Rey and Obi-wan sharing an accent, there is no evidence supporting Obi-wan as her father. Though, there is a theory that Obi-wan is Rey’s grandfather, and Luke is her father, which would explain the accent.
There’s also, you know, the possibility that she’s just an orphaned, force-sensitive girl with no relation to anyone in the previous movies.
Kylo Ren is a double-agent for the Jedi
The conflict between light and dark for Kylo Ren puts him in a similar position as Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. He is actively seeking the dark side, while simultaneously being drawn to the light side. There are people that believe Kylo Ren is embracing the dark side to earn the trust of Snoke, to takedown the new Sith from the inside.
This theory seems too good to be true. Kylo Ren does say he wants to “finish what you started” to Darth Vader’s mangled helmet. In Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader began the destruction of the Sith, with the killing of Emperor Palpatine. However, he still murdered his father, Han Solo, to sink further into the dark side. An action as serious as that would be hard to forgive.
Rey’s memory has been wiped
Again, with her ability to takedown a trained Sith apprentice with seemingly no Jedi training is suspicious. If Rey was really already trained by Luke, then she could possibly have some subconscious knowledge of the force. Then, when Kylo Ren turns to the dark side, she could have been sent to Jakku with her memory wiped for protection, or to prevent another of Luke’s students from going to the dark side.
This theory could help explain her Jedi abilities, the “Rey is Luke/Leia/Obi-wan’s Daughter” theory, as well as why some characters seem to already know of her existence, like how Kylo Ren reacts when he discovers Finn and BB-8 are traveling with her. However, there is no evidence of her receiving any training in the flashback or any indication that Rey was older than a toddler when she was placed on Jakku.
